“Through my work with hundreds of donors and their families, I have developed a simple overarching philosophy—giving can and should be a heartfelt and rewarding experience.”

- Janice Loomer Margolis

Philanthropy has been Janice Loomer Margolis’ passion for more than 30 years. One of Canada’s most respected philanthropy experts, she has dedicated her career to supporting fundraising activities for worthwhile causes that span the gamut from higher education to healthcare, social justice, religion-based charities and the environment.

Trained as a lawyer with an LLB from The University of British Columbia, Janice’s legal practice centred on charity law, tax-planned charitable giving and wills and estates. With an in-depth understanding of the legal side of the charitable sector under her belt, the transition to philanthropy work was seamless. In that arena, Janice has held senior advancement and philanthropy positions at UBC, the Jewish Community Foundation of Greater Vancouver, the BC Cancer Foundation, Quest University Canada and Ecojustice Canada. She managed major gifts, planned gifts and other fundraising campaigns at these organizations that have raised hundreds of millions of dollars for worthwhile causes.

As a member of philanthropic advisory and financial planning associations, including the Vancouver Estate Planning Council and the Canadian Association of Gift Planners, Janice has been recognized for her significant contributions to Canadian philanthropy, including receiving the Friend of CAGP Award in 2010. She currently teaches courses and conducts workshops on philanthropy and tax-planned charitable giving.

A lifelong learner, Janice regularly attends workshops, courses and conferences to bolster her facilitation skills and ensure she is fully up-to-date on the latest philanthropy practices, guidelines, regulations and tax opportunities. Janice sees herself as an important conduit in the giving process, bridging the goals of her clients with the needs of their causes of choice and the advice of their valued advisors.

Most important, Janice is a skilled facilitator and mentor with a unique ability to work with individuals, couples and families to help them articulate their values, motivations, interests and desired impacts and transform them into practical, fulfilling and measurable giving plans.

A married mother of two, when Janice isn’t working with donors she can usually be found practicing yoga or burning some of her boundless energy outdoors— cycling, dragon boat paddling, golfing, hiking or running.
